J.R. Eppler “Rouge” Old Vines ’14 California (normally $35)
John Eppler started his wine career in the wine first by selling, then distributing, and finally making it himself when he hand picked a ton and half of Zinfandel in St Helena in 1986. He has gone on to wine huge awards and high points on his creations. This wine if sourced from old vine vineyards in the north coast and the blend is comprised of 46% Zinfandel, 44% Petite Sirah, and 10% Petite Verdot. Black in the glass, this 14.3% alcohol wine starts on the palate with blackberry, boysenberry, espresso bean, dark chocolate, black pepper, bacon, and Chinese spice. The finish is extracted and lasts forever.
Outcast “The Drifter” ’13 Mendocino (normally $45)
This wine is made by Brian Graham who cut his chops with Bob Levy making Harlan, as well as touching Colgin, Screaming Eagle, and Pahlmeyer. This wine is sourced from vineyards high in the Mendocino Hills and is a blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Petite Sirah. Clocking in at 14.8% alcohol, buckle your seatbelt folks. Huge fruit bomb with flavors of blueberry, blackberry, toasty oak, roasted game, wild sage, mineral, and chocolate covered cherry on the long, rich finish.
Bank Note “The Vault” ’13 Napa Valley (normally $32)
This blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Zinfandel, and 23% Syrah is made by Bill Knuttel who got his start making the great wine of Dry Creek Cellars and Chalk Hill. This wine is 14.5 alcohol and has flavors of cassis, wild black raspberry, black cherry, cedar, smoke, leather, black pepper, and coffee. The finish is long and rich with a hint of clove and well integrated tannins.
