The term “musque” is French for “perfumed or musky”. Several varietals of wine grapes have mutated – Chard, SB – and the most well known mutation is Gewurztraminer, into Musque versions. Traminer grapes mutated into a musque clone and then was known as Gewurtztraminer. These clones are now known as distinct varietals.
Sooooo, this SB is super aromatic, no? Yes it is. Very NZ in style, with a musky “cat-piss” nose and heavily citrus influenced. Grapefruit, meyer lemon, and other tropical fruits. Bright acidity, clean, crisp finish.
The vineyard is in the Green Valley of Napa, close to Suisun Valley. We picked 2 times starting on 8/15 (at 22 brix) and 8/17 (at 23 brix) from 2 different blocks. The grapes came in early and cold (which is highly desired). All tank fermented, no malo. Whole cluster pressed. Light maceration to pick up skin flavors.
This SB is rockin’ and I have tasted many that were double in price that were not nearly as yummy.
